His work has been exhibited and collected extensively in public galleries, private foundations and collections worldwide including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; the Museum of Modern Art , New York; Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg; the Museum Ludwig, Cologne; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.

He has participated in Documenta V (1972), VI (1977), and VII (1982), as well as the 2005 Venice Biennale, and the Biennale Sao Paolo in 2006. Among his many honors are National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships (1976 and 1983), a Guggenheim Fellowship (1994), Wolfgang Hahn Prize (1995), and a Skowhegan Medal for Painting/Conceptual Art (1999).

Early in his career Weiner was invited to the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design by Gerald Ferguson and David Askevold where he contributed to the development of the college as one of the most important international art schools of the time.

In 1997 the major work, With the Passage of Time was installed at Wynick/Tuck Gallery in a solo exhibition.  The work remained in a private collection until recently when it was donated to the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Weiner is one of the central figures in the formation of conceptual art in the 1960s. From 1968 he considered language as a sculptural material to be at the heart of his practice and at this time he formulated his “Declaration of Intent”, published in 1969, as follow:
